WSU and Heartspring: Keeping Things Organized
Wichita State University Seniors Help Heartspring with Senior Project
Heartspring loves to partner with Wichita’s educational institutions. This spring we were able to work with Wichita State University’s industrial engineering department on a special project. Three WSU seniors made Heartspring’s mail room their senior project.
The soon-to-be graduates worked on formalizing the inventory in our store and mail room. The team built a spreadsheet to track all of the items as well as a system surrounding it to make sure it’s accurate and up to date.
“We saw that the system that they were using was just paper,” WSU Student Alex Gutierrez said. “We could make it faster just by going through Excel and the database.”
Instead of using handwritten forms, which can be slow and labor-intensive, the spreadsheets will be user-friendly and speed up the process while being low-budget. They worked closely with the Heartspring team to make sure the system met our needs.
“You can see actual value to it,” WSU Student Kaydn Miller said. “It’s going to be put to use and it’s actually going to help somebody.”
Their project will help us plan and make sure we have enough of each item. Facilities can put a minimum quantity and once the inventory hits that minimum, they can go ahead and order more. It also will allow us to buy more in bulk less often, saving time and money.
The final part of their project was a presentation at the engineering open house. They were able to put all their work on display for other students, faculty, and families to see.
We’d like to send Alex Gutierrez, Kayce Litzau and Kadyn Miller a huge thank you for all the work they’ve done.
